BRIEFLY ABOUT THE PROJECT
SLOVAK TEXTS FROM THE PRE-STANDARDIZATION PERIOD
The project Slovak Texts from the Pre-standardization Period was established at the Department of Slovak History, Faculty of Arts, Comenius University. The team, led by Prof. Martin Homza, consists of experts in Slovak history, the history and development of the Slovak language, and the history of literature. On this interdisciplinary basis, we examine the beginnings and development of Slovak written culture in the early modern period, in the context of processes such as the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation/Recatholicization, and the centralization and formation of the modern state. The main goal of the project is to gradually publish the examined texts not only in the form of a printed scholarly edition, but also in an accessible online database.
OUR
goals
Our aim is to continue where similar projects ended half a century ago. At the same time, however, we are expanding the geographical as well as chronological scope of research. At the initial stage, the focus of our work became the territory of present-day eastern Slovakia (historical Upper Hungary), a region marked by considerable diversity. It featured a developed urban culture (Košice, Prešov, Bardejov, Levoča, Kežmarok, Gelnica, among others), the presence of prominent noble families (Thurzó, Rákóczi, Tököli, Horváth-Stančič, Berzeviczy, Sirmay, and others), and in the ecclesiastical sphere the activities of several confessions. It was also characterized by the coexistence of multiple ethnic groups. Taken together, these factors provide ideal conditions for studying the use of Slovak in various social and cultural contexts.
